The Skellig Islands, Skellig Michael and Small
Skellig, stand aloof in the Atlantic Ocean off
Valentia Island, County Kerry. A designated UNESCO
World Heritage site, Skellig Michael is renowned among archaeologists
as the site of a well-preserved monastic outpost of the early Christian
period, while Small Skellig is famous in the world of natural wildlife. It`s
mysticism came to the attention of the world when Skellig Micheal was
chosen as a location for the filming of Star Wars: The Force Awakens in
2015. Its 600-odd slab step climb, monastery, church, beehive huts
and (slightly) more modern lighthouses will intrigue any visitor.

Lying at the entrance to the spectacular Bantry
Bay guarding the deep water harbour of Berehaven
in West Cork, the island is rich in archaeological sites
dating from the Bronze Age through to medieval times, including ring
forts, standing stones, wedge tombs and burial sites. At various stages
the British constructed Martello towers, a signal tower, military
barracks and a military fortification which hosts two six inch guns, all of
which can be seen today. Together with its friendly people, Bere
Island’s greatest asset is its unspoiled and unpolluted environment.
